Charles Mathies, University of Jyväskylä (Finland) will speak the lecture, which focuses on the development of international university rankings from their initial beginnings to their current prominent role in higher education globally. We will examine seven prominent international university rankings highlighting specific metrics and definitions used and how they compare to one another. Finally, we will end discussing why the rankings matter including how they are used and the reasons for the criticism and praise they receive.
Dr. Charles Mathies has held multiple university management positions in Europe and the United States. He has published, presented, and taught in Europe and North America on topics of institutional research, student retention and completion, university rankings, international student market, university governance, and research funding and innovation. Dr. Mathies was recently named (2015) a Global Ambassador for the Association of Institutional Reseachers (AIR). He is a reviewer for AIR’s annual conference, AIR’s professional File, the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) annual conference and Higher Education journal and sits on the editorial board for theTertiary Education and Management journal.
