International Spring School on Urban Digital Twins

Join us in London, UK, for the second edition of this international school – open for PhD students, researchers, companies’ representatives, wishing to explore, learn, and innovate with cutting-edge digital twin technologies.

It will challenge participants to think critically and creatively about the security, resilience, and futureproofing of urban infrastructure. The program integrates keynote sessions, demonstrations, fundamentals and practical sessions with state-of-the-art technologies, providing participants with the abilities to add novel dimension to their research – digital twin alignment.

Practical sessions will include collaborative project-based learning, prototype development and discussions.

All participants, including PhD students, researchers, and company representatives, will receive a certificate of completion.

Organized by Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), this year’s Spring School will partner with University College London (UCL) and the University of Glasgow, bringing keynote talks and mentoring from leading researchers.

Gain practical experience by building your own digital twin

Learn to use state-of-the-art tools such as Cesium and iTwin, and apply them in a real project context. Throughout the training, you’ll have the flexibility to integrate other technologies you already know or are eager to explore, allowing you to tailor the process to your specific research or professional interests.

Turn ideas into working solutions

Through project-based, hands-on sessions, you’ll work in teams to develop and test a prototype. This collaborative process will strengthen both your technical expertise and your ability to translate ideas into tangible results.

Participation fee

The participation fee is 1200 EUR. Participants fund their own travel and accommodation.

The full participation fee applies to industry participants. To support academic engagement, PhD students may apply for a full fee waiver, and early career researchers for a partial waiver.

Participation will be limited to a select number of participants to ensure a high-quality, hands-on learning experience. Once registration closes, we will review the number of available fee waivers for PhD students and early career researchers.

Technology Focus

Hands-on sessions will include the development of digital twins using state-of-the-art tools such as Cesium and iTwin, alongside immersive vibe coding workflows, with participants guided step-by-step to learn and apply these techniques during the event. Participants are also encouraged to incorporate their own expertise and may choose to use any technology they prefer for development. If desired, participants are welcome to work with their preferred tools and technologies.

The school will take place at Bentley Systems’ brand-new office in London’s landmark 8 Bishopsgate building – a state-of-the-art venue featuring modern group workspaces, demonstration areas, and a main stage for key sessions and presentations.

Context Creation and Import – iTwin Capture and Cesium

Learn how to create hybrid geometries using iTwin Capture and Cesium. This session will guide participants through the process of context creation and importing data into the platforms.

Getting Started with Cesium and iTwin Platforms

Dive into the foundational aspects of Cesium and iTwin platforms with a hands-on session designed to equip participants with the skills needed to begin leveraging this technology.

15:30 Groupwork:
Piloting Cesium / iTwin Platforms

Participants will work in groups under the guidance of experts to pilot Cesium and iTwin platforms for geometries import. This session will blend hands-on practice with mentorship from platforms specialists.

Day 3

9:00 Workshop 4:
Linking Your Data – iTwin IoT

Teams will learn how to link IoT data to their models, will work collaboratively on developing their case. Live data from KTU CSCI resource base will be available for the participants on demand.

Building your Digital Shadow

Under the guidance of tutors, groups will incorporate their data into the platform, progressing towards a functional digital shadow for their projects.

Second Ideation Session – Refining Group Goals

Groups will refine their project goals. This session will encourage participants to consider time constraints and focus on addressing the key challenges and objectives for the week.

Day 4

9:00 Groupwork:
Collaborative Innovation

A full day dedicated to project development, featuring on-site and online consultations with technology experts and tutors. This session will provide personalized guidance to help participants advance their digital twin projects.

Groups will work on integrating predictive elements into their digital twins, such as factoring in weather data to enable scenario-based forecasting and analysis. Participants will bring their data into the platform and enhance its functionality.

Day 5

Finalizing Use Cases and Preparing Presentations

Groups will dedicate time to finalizing their project presentations, ensuring they effectively communicate their work and insights gained during the Spring School.

Each group will present their digital twin projects, showcasing their progress, challenges, and solutions. This session will include discussions and feedback from tutors and peers.
