The evolution of sustainable architecture. Possible solutions for today

Project description:

The aim of the project is to search for alternative solutions to the current situation of sustainable architecture in each decade, starting in the 1980s, after systematizing the development and problems of sustainability perspective and sustainable architecture in the world and the situation in Lithuania. These solutions can include both concrete ways to ensure a stable situation for a certain period of time and the formulation of a broad approach to the future. The project is implemented in three stages: first, a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative literature review and analysis of progress and regression in the field of sustainable architecture for each decade in terms of expression, technology, materials is carried out based on the implemented examples of sustainable architecture; in the second stage, the analysis and assessment of today’s issues of sustainable development and sustainable architecture in the world and the situation in Lithuania are performed; in the third stage, an algorithm for a complex evaluation system of sustainable architecture development based on theoretical system modeling will be developed and applied.

Project is funded by EU Structural Funds according to the 2014–2020 Operational Programme for the European Union Funds’ Investments priority “Development of scientific competence of researchers, other researchers, students through practical scientific activities” under Measure No. 09.3.3-LMT-K-712.


Project results:

We assume that in the field of architectural design there is still a lack of awareness of the wide array of choice of innovative aesthetics, technologies, material solutions and for this reason there is often a sceptical approach of the construction sector to sustainable technologies and aesthetics, a global lack of green architecture can be seen as well. The project has provided the systematic perspective on the development and potential of sustainable architecture, useful for both sustainable architecture research and practical design activities. The results of the project were presented in two scientific conferences and two scientific publications:
