Kaunas will become the focus for digital twin research for three days

Important | 2025-05-12

On May 13–15, Kaunas University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture and its partners will invite business, municipal, scientific and urban communities from all over the world to the events dedicated to the development and use of smart cities and their digital twins.

According to Prof. Andrius Jurelionis, the Dean of the KTU Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, a large number of scientists and business representatives from all over the world are expected in Kaunas, especially at the congress, which is being organised in cooperation with the International Building Digital Twin Association.

“These are exceptional events not only for KTU, but also for the whole city and the country. Strategically, Lithuania strives to create high-value products and services, but in many aspects, we are still lagging behind the most advanced countries in the world. At KTU, we are working a lot on digitalisation innovations in the fields of construction and city management,” says Jurelionis.

Dynamic energy certification of buildings, which can be based on actual energy consumption, smart building management systems, digitisation of utilities, and citizen involvement in urban management and design, are just a few examples of the research directions at KTU.

“The fact that Kaunas has been selected for the major event for digital twins’ research means recognition for our researchers and scientists, as it shows that we are doing important work that is being recognised by international partners and organisations,” said Jurelionis.

According to the Dean of KTU Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, these events will address how to make urban and building design solutions more transparent, contemporary and sustainable. In many cases, digitisation helps to solve complex tasks such as increasing sustainability, improving safety, reducing carbon footprint, and digital preservation of cultural heritage. Also, the digitisation of green spaces can be useful for preserving trees or green spaces.

All three events will be held in English in the historic KTU Building of Cultural Societies, next to the Independence Square.

On 13 May, a free Brokerage Event, HE Cluster 4, will be held for business and municipal representatives looking to expand their network of partners, who are interested in applying to the European Union’s European Horizons research and innovation programme. This event is organised in cooperation with the European Commission, together with the international projects SmartWins, EDIH4LT and SustAInLivWork. The fifth Building Digital Twin International Congress (BDTIC5) moves from Barcelona to Kaunas on 14 May. It will feature workshops and presentations on digital twin innovations, AI integration, standardisation and other topics. Representatives from industry, business, NGOs, municipalities, academia and anyone interested in the digitalisation of the building sector are invited to attend. The main organisers of the event are the Digital Twinning of Buildings Association. Information and registration: https://buildingdigitaltwin.org/bdtic-2025/

15 May KTU Faculty of Building and Architecture invites you to the first Building Digital Twin Scientific Conference.  Researchers from various fields will present their research on building digital twins and the digitisation of the construction sector. This event is part of the international SmartWins project. For more information: https://bdtsc.ktu.edu/

From 19–23 May, the use of digital twins of buildings in urban planning, infrastructure and building maintenance will be explored by PhD students in an international workshop.
