Invitation to the open module by prof. Edmund Saliklis: „Design Based on the Historical Evolution of Structures and Architecture“

Important | 2024-03-19

We are excited to announce that Professor Edmond P. Saliklis from California Polytechnic State University will be delivering the module focusing on the historical development of civil engineering and architectural structures. This module aims to offer students a fresh perspective on the advancement of architecture and civil engineering. Professor Saliklis brings a wealth of experience, having taught this course to over a thousand students at California Polytechnic State University (CalPoly), spanning various disciplines such as business, arts, mathematics, and more. In the United States, this course is recognized as a general education course, fostering students’ creativity and providing them with a profound understanding of the field through the evolution of structures and architecture.

Aim of the module

To provide knowledge about the historical development of the design of building structures and the ability to analyse structures by making a mock-up.

Description of the module

Engineering sciences often focus on technical calculations. However, an important point is often overlooked: behind every technology is a human being! This course will look at the historical development of structural design, starting in the second half of the 19th century, when Hooke’s law was the basis for the first computational methods. In the course of the lectures, you will have the opportunity to get to know the main protagonists and schools: Gustave Eiffel, Robert Maillart, Rafael Guastavino, Max Berg, Felix Candela… In this way, the history of construction will help students to gain a richer understanding of the field of civil engineering
